Dealing With Car Accidents: 5 Musts After You’ve Been in a Wreck

by Amy Walters

Nobody plans to be in a car accident. It just happens; when it happens to you, the results can be devastating, physically, emotionally and financially. But the fact is that most people will be in a car accident sometime in their life. Maybe it’s a simple fender-bender or maybe it sends them to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

When an accident happens to you, there are five things you must do. The first must-do actually starts before the accident happens, but after you’ve been in an accident, you’ll be glad for the advance preparation.

Have an “Accident Kit” Handy

Be prepared—make an accident kit and keep it in your glove box for these types of emergencies. Keep your car insurance information in your car’s glove box. If your cell phone doesn’t have photo capabilities, add a camera, and paper and pen to write down the other driver’s information and details of the accident. A schematic of a street intersection where you can diagram how the accident happened also is handy. When the unthinkable occurs, use the camera to take pictures of the accident scene, all vehicles and injuries sustained by anyone in your vehicle. If your injuries do not allow this, have someone else take the photos.

Get Help

Call 911 for police and ambulance services. Even if you think your injuries aren’t that bad, get checked out by emergency medical personnel, then see a medical provider as soon as possible for treatment. If you feel any physical pain, it’s best to get checked out than be sorry you didn’t a few days later.

Be Careful What You Say

Don’t make any statements to the other driver’s insurance company lest you inadvertently say something that harms your claim. Do not admit fault; let the police determine who caused the accident.

Consult a Personal Injury Attorney

If the accident was the other driver’s fault, you are entitled to compensation for your injuries, pain and suffering, and lost wages. Liability insurance companies are notoriously difficult to work with. A Modesto personal injury attorney can help you with your claim. Follow his advice implicitly. You’ll be glad you did when you get that settlement check.

Follow Medical Advice

Get reasonable medical treatment for your injuries. Do exactly what your providers tell you to do and don’t miss any appointments.
